It had not been feasible even if desired for people to enjoy KAKIDEN’s cuisine at anytime in the Yoshiro TANIGUCHI designed Japanese-style guest room. The taste of tea cannot be enjoyed unless Kaiseki cuisine is added that goes beyond just drinking tea. In addition, tea cuisine allows you to touch real Japanese cuisine even if tea is not known. “A place for adults to enjoy in Shinjuku”
Words by Yasunari KAWABATA, a Nobel-prize winning writer, prepared the way for establishment of the restaurant. KAKIDEN in Shinjuku conveys the virtues of Japanese culture in an elegant kaiseki restaurant.

Thirty-nine years have passed since KAKIDEN was established in Shinjuku, Tokyo to introduce the authentic taste of chakaiseki together with tea ceremony culture. The lettering and naming of the restaurant “Kakiden” was written by the hand of Yasunari KAWABATA, who received the Nobel prize in literature. The appearance and interior were designed by Dr. Yoshiro TANIGUCHI who was commissioned to undertake work on the Crown Prince’s Palace, the State Guest House Japanese-style room and the Imperial Garden Theater. You will find everything in chakaiseki satisfactory while enjoying the virtues of Japanese tea ceremony room architecture.

Starting as a kaiseki class for authentic tea ceremony

For the Genroku to Kyoho eras during the Edo Period, a townspeople culture flourished and tea ceremony rooms reached new heights of prosperity. As a result, many tea ceremonies were held where hosts found it difficult to prepare kaiseki cuisine by themselves. Thus a profession exclusively for tea ceremony “KAKIDEN” came into being. KAKIDEN has since cultivated the taste of tradition for more than 270 years without a break. With instructions received from the grand master of the Omotesenke school of tea, KAKIDEN has preserved the purity of kaiseki cuisine.
